Ryan Hurst Cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s Live-Action God of War Series

Ryan Hurst has officially been cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series. Here’s everything to know about the cast, story, and production details.

Prime Video is officially bringing one of gaming’s most iconic characters to live action. Ryan Hurst has been cast as Kratos in the upcoming God of War, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

The series, based on PlayStation’s legendary mythology-driven video game franchise, has already received a two-season order, with pre-production underway in Vancouver and casting now in progress.

God of War Story: Father, Son, and Fate

The live-action adaptation is being led by writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, For All Mankind). The show closely follows the narrative of the franchise’s last two critically acclaimed games.

At its core, God of War tells the emotional journey of Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother, Faye, by scattering her ashes. Along the way:

  • Kratos struggles to teach his son how to be a better god
  • Atreus challenges his father to become more human
  • Their bond becomes the emotional backbone of the series

This father-son dynamic marked a major evolution for the franchise and will serve as the heartbeat of the TV adaptation.

Who Is Kratos?

Kratos is one of the most recognizable characters in modern pop culture. Spartan by birth and god by destiny, he was raised in a brutal warrior culture and rose through the ranks as a feared military leader. His life changed forever after striking a tragic deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, sacrificing his soul for victory in battle.

Across 10 successful games, Kratos has:

  • Slain gods, monsters, and mortals
  • Become known for his stoic personality and unmatched combat skills
  • Built a legacy rooted in rage, loss, and redemption

In the series, however, Kratos faces his greatest challenge yet—not a god, but fatherhood.

Ryan Hurst’s Return to the God of War Universe

Interestingly, this isn’t Hurst’s first connection to the franchise. He previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance. His casting as Kratos now marks a major step forward, bringing him to the center of the live-action universe.

Hurst is widely beloved for portraying Opie Winston in FX’s Sons of Anarchy, a role that cemented his fan-favorite status. His recent and notable credits include:

  • The Abandons (Netflix) – as Miles Alderton
  • The Walking Dead (AMC)
  • SWAT (CBS)
  • Bosch (Prime Video)
  • Bates Motel (A&E)

Up next, Hurst will appear in The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Trojan War epic, set to release on July 17.

Production Team and Direction

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

Executive producers include key figures from both television and gaming, such as Cory Barlog and Hermen Hulst, ensuring authenticity to the source material.

Acclaimed director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys) will helm the first two episodes, setting the tone for the series.

What to Expect

With a strong creative team, a faithful adaptation of the games’ most emotional chapters, and Ryan Hurst stepping into the role of Kratos, Prime Video’s God of War is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated video game adaptations to date.

For fans, this series promises epic action, deep character storytelling, and a powerful exploration of legacy, grief, and redemption—worthy of the God of War name.
